Basic Coding in Kodu: Apples and Kodus
This preserved Create2Discover lesson introduces beginner coding in Kodu Game Lab using simple WHEN/DO logic, loops, movement, and an Apples and Kodus coding challenge.
New to Kodu? Start with our Kodu Game Lab Basics resource first. It includes current installation guidance, computer requirements, navigation practice, and a beginner Kodu Basics lesson.
Watch the basic coding lesson
Students learn how to open a character’s program, understand Kodu’s WHEN and DO coding logic, use the ALWAYS loop, add MOVE + WANDER, test their code, and add more detailed behaviors.
A note about this video: This is an older Create2Discover recording that we preserved because the learning is still valuable. The video quality and presentation are not as polished as our current lessons, and parts of the Kodu interface may look a little different today, but the core coding concepts demonstrated here are still useful for beginners.

Apples and Kodus coding challenge
Use what you learned in the lesson to create a simple behavior for a Kodu character.
- Start a new empty world.
- Add an apple and make it blue.
- Add a Kodu character.
- Program the Kodu to wander around the world.
- Program the Kodu to eat the blue apple when it sees it.
- Play the game and test whether your code works.
Optional extension: Add a red apple and a second Kodu. Try to make the new Kodu wander until it finds the red apple, then pick it up.

This is the original legacy worksheet. It includes a final “show off to an instructor” prompt from the old class; families working independently can simply skip that line.
What students practice
- Opening the programming menu for a Kodu character or object
- Understanding events and behaviors with WHEN and DO
- Using ALWAYS to create a repeating loop
- Adding detail to movement and interaction code
- Testing code and revising it when needed
- Using object color as part of a coding challenge
